New vision for the Museum

Museum of London awarded HLF grant

Museum's Capital City project will create world-class galleries that complete the story of London up to the present day.

The Capital City project will also create:

  • 25% more gallery space, double the number of 7th-21st century objects on display, all accessible online,
  • new glass fronted gallery looking onto London Wall for the Lord Mayor's Coach family-friendly area, keeping the Victorian Walk, adding a café and an information zone a flexible learning centre, with an e-learning studio a museum that Londoners will find as diverse and stimulating as the city itself.

The project will cost around £18 million.  The Museum will:

  • seek private and public funding.It has already raised over £12 million,
  • open the Clore Learning Centre in 2008 and the new galleries in 2009,
  • minimise disruption to visitors.There will be some gallery closures but total museum closure is not anticipated continue to be free for all visitors and offer visitors lots to see and do.
