More about the Museum of London Group

The Museum of London Group comprises the Museum of London, the Museum in Docklands and the Museum of London Archaeology Service. The LAARC (the London Archaeological Archive and Research Centre) and the Centre for Human Bioarchaeology form part of the Museum of London’s Early department.

Museum of London

London is one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities in the world and the Museum of London tells its story. It is the single most important source of knowledge on the capital and is uniquely an international, national, regional and local organisation. The Museum is committed to recording and explaining change in every part of London life.

The Museum was founded in 1976 and cares for over two million objects in its collection. It is one of the world’s largest social history museums with an international reputation for scholarship and innovation. The significant collections, ranging from fashion to human remains are widely accessible to researchers resulting in many studies and publications.

The Museum also holds the largest archaeological archive in Europe and plays a vital role as mediator and interpreter of this wealth of information.

Museum in Docklands

The Museum in Docklands displays the Museum of London’s Port and River collection and explores the story of London’s river, port and people, from Roman settlement, through to the recent regeneration of London’s former Docklands.

Opened in 2003, the Museum is located over five floors of a splendid late Georgian Grade I listed warehouse on West India Quay. It shows how the region has been at the heart of centuries of social and economic change and pays homage to the people who helped to build and shape it.

The Museum in Docklands is a separate legal entity from the Museum of London.

Museum of London Archaeology Service

The Museum of London Archaeology Service (MoLAS) is a division of the Museum of London and for over 30 years has provided archaeology services to the property and heritage sectors. MoLAS generates most of its revenue from providing archaeological services in the context of obligations placed by Government planning guidance. MoLAS’s reputation is high, both in the development industry and in academia. Together, MoLAS and the Museum of London have rewritten the history of London.
