International Organisation of Museums (ICOM)
ICOM is the international organisation of museums and museum professionals which is committed to the conservation, continuation and communication to society of the world's natural and cultural heritage, present and future, tangible and intangible.
ICOM was created in 1946 and is a non-governmental organisation maintaining formal relations with UNESCO. The ICOM Secretariat has its headquarters based in the UNESCO building in Paris. Today, the organisation has 21,000 members in 146 countries, it operates through 115 national committees and through 30 international committees of specialists and 6 regional bodies.
ICOM UK is one of the larger ICOM national committees. ICOM has 60 affiliated organisations including the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the International Organisation for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage (ICCROM).
ICOM UK is a non-profit, non-governmental organization representing almost one thousand museum professionals in Britain. ICOM works to establish professional and ethical standards for all museum activities, promoting training and raising public awareness through a truly global network. Its strategy is based around generating and disseminating knowledge, being pro active and inclusive.
When you join ICOM UK you will receive an ICOM card, the bi-annual ICOM UK Newsletter and ICOM News (sent from Paris), access to the Jisc distribution list and free invitations to ICOM UK events and AGM.
Jack Lohman, the Director of the Museum of London Group, is the Chairman of ICOM (UK).
